Featuring on“theoreticalinheritanceand innovation of preventing and treating serious diseases by clinical classics of TCM”, TCM Clinical Fundamentals of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (GZUCM) carries out its research worksystemicallythrough building the foundation and clinical research system of preventing modern diseases(diabetes mellitus, rheumatism, encephalopathy and viroses)by classics of TCM.
1.Introduction to TCM ClinicalFundamentals
Founded in 1984, the TCM Clinical Fundamentalsof GZUCM is composed of three teaching and research sections (Treatise on Febrile Diseases,Synopsis of Golden Chamber,andSeasonal Febrile Diseases,respectively)and their affiliated wards, and one institute (Institute of Tropical Medicine, GZUCM). In 1997, this discipline was promoted to key discipline co-built by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) and Guangdong province. In 2000 and 2001, this discipline advanced to key one on theprovinciallevel and SATCM level, respectively,and took the lead in establishing cooperative relationships with institutions from provinces and cities of Shanghai, Tianjin, Heilongjiang, Hunan, Hubei and Guizhou, etc.In 2002, this discipline upgraded tonationalkey one, with the qualification of ranking first in the entire disciplines domestically andexemptingfrom defense.
2. Profiles of the Academic Leaders
Li Saimei, M.D. professor, chief physician, academic leader of TCM clinical fundamentals,national key discipline, specialist who enjoys the State Council Special Allowance, professor of GZUCM, doctoral supervisor, doctoral collaborative professor, director of teaching and research sections ofTreatise on Febrile Diseases, director of Classics Clinical Institution, First Clinical Medical College. She takes the lead in the field of TCM clinical fundamentals of GZUCM. Professor Li also serves asvice-chairman of Professional Society of Classical Prescriptions and Research Society of Prescriptions Dosage and Efficacy, World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS);vice-chairman of Theory of Zhang Zhongjing Specialized Committee and Research Society of Prescriptions Dosage and Efficacy,China Association of Chinese Medicine (CACM);chairman of Theory of Zhang Zhongjing Specialized Committee, Guangdong Provincial Association of Chinese Medicine;Vice-chairman of Metabolic Disease Specialized Committee,China Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.She is also in charge ofTreatise on Febrile Diseases, one of National Program of Web-Delivery for Elaborate Courses (NPWDEC). And she is the core member of national level teaching team 'Clinical Foundation of Chinese Medicine'.
Professor Li Saimei devoted herself inteaching and clinical research of TCM clinical fundamentals theoryin the last 3 decades. She isspecializedin treatingdiabetes mellitus and complications,thyroid diseases,hepatopathyanddifficult miscellaneous diseasesof internal medicine with classical prescriptions. Breakthrough has been made in treatingdiabetic heart diseasewith classicalprescriptionsand curing diabetes with pure TCM. Professor Li presidedoverthe‘11thFive Year Plan’12state-supporting technology projects and research programs of provincial and ministerial level, and 15 teaching topics as well.She has published over 200 research papers. Sheis the editor-in-chief ofHandouts of Treatise on Febrile DiseasesandTreatise on Febrile Diseases: Theory and Practiceand over 30 textbooks and works; and associate editor of 15 books. She wonNational Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, second prize and 9 achievements rewards ofprovincialandministeriallevel. More than 100post doctors, doctors and postgraduates received training and cultivation under her supervision.
3. Experimental Site and Facilities
Laboratory of TCM Clinical Fundamentals,Lingnan Medical Research Centeris located in Sanyuanli campus of GZUCM, fourth floor of national key discipline laboratory building.Thetotal value of instruments and equipments exceeds 11 million RMB, covering an experimental site area of 1500 square meters.
4. Talents Team
TCM clinicalfundamentalsof GZUCM always pay great attention to talents team cultivation.After more than 3 decades of development,a large group of TCM experts with greatinfluenceboth at home and abroad appeared, like He Zhixiong, Liu Chixuan, He Ruzhan, Liu Shichang, Xiong Manqi, Chen Jifan, Peng Shengquan, Li Guoqiao. Thanks totheirfineacademic inheritance, famous scholars including Lin Peizheng, Li Saimei, Zhong Jiaxi, Liao Shihuang, Huang Yangmo and Fu Linchun, as well as backup academic leaders Lin Changsong and Wu Zhibing emerged. Thus the academic echelon is well balancedin terms of combing of old, middle-aged and young.

5.Research Interests
Focusing on“theoreticalinheritanceand innovation of preventing and treating serious diseases by clinical classics of TCM”, there are fourresearchinterests. (1) Innovation on TCM clinical classics inheritance model and curriculum system. (2) Application of Lingnanfebrile diseasestherapy regularityand theoretical system construction. (3) Establishment offoundationand clinical research system on preventingrheumatism, diabetes mellitus, encephalopathyby TCM clinical classics. (4) Research on prevention and treatment of serious diseasesincludingmalaria, AIDS and emerging viroses with TCM.
6. Research Projects and Achievements
In the past five years,TCM clinical fundamentals of GZUCM undertook 24 research projects of national level and 23 of provinciallevel. With total research funds over 30 million RMB, more than 60 research papers, monographs and textbooks have beenpublishedand 3 new national patents have been applied for. For its outstanding contributionsthis discipline has made tofighting against serious diseases such as malaria and SARS, it received awards and honors from both state andprovinciallevel:National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, second prize;ProvincialPrize for Progress in Science and Technology, Guangdong, first and third prize.This discipline also focuses on developing new drugs. Jiangtangsanhuang Tablets, Tongbiling and Erteng Tongbi Mixturehave been widely applied in clinic as hospital self-produced preparations. Further research has been conducted and Jiangtangsanhuang Tablets is under the protection of national patent.
7. Talents Cultivationand Team Building
TCM clinical fundamentals of GZUCM havebeen authorized to entitle the graduate students with doctoral degree since 1986 and post-doctoral recruitment since 1997. In 2008, the teaching team of this discipline was awarded the honorable title of"Teaching Team at State-level". Among many continuing education programs hosted bythisteaching team,“International Seminar on Clinical Application ofClassicalPrescriptions”enjoys high reputation both domestic and overseas. This seminar has become brand building project and plays animportantrole in spreading TCM classics and classical prescriptions home and abroad.
TCM Clinical Fundamentals of GZUCM attaches great importance to talents cultivation and team building, and has trained more than 500 postgraduates, 200 doctors and 3post doctorsin the past five years. In 2016, one professor and one young scholar wererecruitedas talentintroductionforthe purpose of enhancing comprehensive capabilities of talents team.
